Multitasking

Jack is picking his nose with one hand while biting the nails on his other. What talent! :D

Hungry, Hungry Preschooler

I recently found out that jack is no longer classed as a toddler. This makes plenty of sense when you think about it. He is running, jumping, climbing.... We even recently made a foray into animal walks! That's right, he can "bear walk".

This is what I get when I ask him to bear-walk for the camera. Cooperative little booger, huh?

With all this physical activity comes a heck of an appetite. But he doesn't necessarily tell me that he's hungry. So how is a mama to find out that instead of three chicken nuggets she should be preparing six, with a side of apple slices and cheese?

In a word: "ransacking"

I was just in the kitchen preparing the aforementioned chicken nuggets. In the 60 seconds it takes, Jack had opened the silverware drawer, demanded a straw, then a "white thingie," then his knife, before he settled on a spoon. And that was just his opening act!

He also managed to open the fridge twice, rummage through my gadget drawer, crash into me four times and almost brain himself on another cabinet door (yes, that he had opened himself and then forgotten about). When he's hungry he literally ricochets through the kitchen, grabbing anything he touches, until I manage to lure him out with a plate of food.

It's one of the few times when my "growing bigger" boy reveals that he is, in fact, still only 2 1/2 years old. There is something charming about a boy who completely loses composure in the anticipation of a good meal. :)

beach trip

My parents came over MLK weekend to visit with Evie and Jack, and to help with the traditional post-baby mayhem. It was loads of fun having them here, and we got a lot of useful projects finished. (You know -- the kind of thing that sits around for weeks, being small but ANNOYING and not getting done because you're busy with a new baby.)

Then on the last day of their visit we didn't do a single thing but just go to the beach and enjoy ourselves. It was really fun. We made a fire and threw rocks into the water, and it was gorgeous in a beach-in-January kind of way! We also got to see that there has been a LOT of erosion on the beach since August, when I was last there. For almost the entire beach, the sand was washed out to literally 6 feet lower than it was in the summer. There was a thin strip of the old beach along the side, but that was it. I guess the heavy rains this year really tore it up.

Without further ado, here are the pictures from the beach!

Back with a bang?

I don't know what possessed me to think I could do daily blog posts when I had a new baby arriving. I will now attempt to return to a semi-normal blogging schedule!

23/365: breakfast out & an ego boost

I took Jack to breakfast at Wildwood Cafe, this cute little breakfast place on Third Street. (This was for Alex's request in honor of his Christmas bonus: "More sleep!")

We spent an hour there and toward the end of our meal a very sweet-looking elderly woman stopped by our table for a moment. She didn't want to interrupt, she explained, but she just wanted to let me know that she had noticed us and wished that every child could be raised with such care, attention, and patience as I was giving to Jack. Then she let Jack know that he was an absolute pleasure to share a restaurant with (to which he stared mutely and shyly at her) and was on her way!

Needless to say, we were very flattered and proud of ourselves! :)
