hallelujah, sourdough bread!

I just made sourdough bread... that is actually sour! Alex and I are pretty sure this is a huge milestone in a bread baker's life. I was ready to give up after this batch if it didn't turn out well, too, because I have failed at sourdough bread soooo many times. Wooo!! I am dancing around and eating yummy slices with butter!

That sure is exciting. The longer you keep your starter alive, the more sour it will get.

Unfortunately, sourdough is only something that can be done with white flour (at least a large portion of white flour), so it is not in my future.

It is very exciting! :) But how am I supposed to get my starter across the country?? Anyway, I am determined to figure out how I can make it with wheat bread, so I will let you know when I get it figured out. :)

SO HOW DO YOU DO IT?!?!?!

I'm on the EDGE of my SEAT here!

Well, keep your pants on! I have some other things to do (pick up a million smushed Ritz crackers off the floor, for one) and then I will come back and figure out what I did. Part of the weird thing is that I was taking care of Jack at the same time I was working on the bread, so I ended up completely altering the timing. You'll see. Give me a day or so to write the post!

As much as I HATE to contribute in any way to the impending relocation... I have to say that pioneers kept their starters alive on the way west. Just needs to be fed and kept reasonably warm. You could carry it in your carry-on or diaper bag if it were a small enough sample. If I do end up going with you we could each take a small container - so as to pass through security. I can't BELIEVE I just offered to help with this dastardly plot to move to the ends of the earth! :)

Wow, you are definitely a good person! :) I also would really like to bring some plants along, so maybe we could make a box of living things to transport. Along with Sparky and Bo, I just realized! :P
